How SmartGroceryAI Works — the Complete Guide

The Live Scanner uses your camera to capture three things from a product at once:

• Barcode — detected automatically as soon as it is in view. It identifies the exact product. Store-printed barcodes that embed the price (common on weighed or in-store packed items) are also understood, and the price is pulled straight out of the code.
• Product name — read from the label text on the packaging or shelf tag.
• Price — read from the price tag (amounts like $2.99; on receipts/tags the TOTAL line wins). You can always adjust the price yourself before adding the item.

When the scanner has a clear, sharp view with the barcode, name and price ready, it captures automatically. One scan coin is used only when an item is actually added to your list — scanning and previewing don't use up coins.

No barcode? No problem. Product Lookup identifies items from pictures instead:

• Upload up to 3 images — the product front, the ingredients / nutrition label, and the barcode side. More images mean a more complete reading.
• Take live pictures — snap the product right in the store with your camera.
• Upload screenshots — shopping online? Screenshots from Walmart, Amazon, Target, Costco, and other store websites or apps work too. The AI reads the product straight off the screenshot.

Tap Get Health Results to run the reading — it uses one coin. Adding the item to your grocery list afterwards is free — there is no second charge.

After a barcode is scanned, the app finds the product's details and nutrition in this order:

• Community database — products already scanned and confirmed by SmartGroceryAI users are matched first, so local items get recognized over time.
• Open Food Facts — a large public food database with nutrition per serving.
• USDA FoodData Central — the U.S. food-data source, used as a further fallback.
• AI matching — when databases come up empty, the AI identifies the product from its label and photos.

Products you scan and name are remembered, so the next lookup of the same item is faster and more accurate.

Set your shopping budget from the budget card (tap the pencil). The app then tracks it live as you add items:

• Spent = the sum of the prices of every item in your list.
• Remaining = your budget minus what you have spent.

The progress bar and message update as you shop:

• Under Budget — you're comfortably within your limit.
• Almost at Budget — spending is getting close to the limit.
• Critical — more than 90% of the budget is used.
• Over Budget — a clear warning showing exactly how far over you are.

Each product's per-serving nutrition (calories, sugar, sodium, saturated fat) is checked against green / yellow / red healthy ranges tailored to the health goals you select in your health profile — such as diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, heart health, obesity, thyroid, or weight goals.

• Green — fine for your profile, no penalty.
• Yellow — enjoy in moderation; slightly lowers the score with a tip.
• Red — a warning for your conditions; lowers the score the most.

The most concerning health category across your active goals determines each nutrient's rating and the product's overall score. Premium members also get the AI Health Report: a deeper AI-written analysis of everything in your scan history, refreshed every few days.

The AI Fitness Coach is a Premium feature — a personal trainer and nutritionist built into the app:

• Personalized workout plans — routines built around your goals, fitness level, and available equipment, with progress tracking as you complete them.
• Meal plans & nutrition tracking — daily meal plans matched to your health profile, plus a food log that counts calories and nutrients for everything you eat.
• Photo food logging — snap a picture of your plate and the AI reads the meal and logs its nutrition for you.
• Coach chat — ask your AI coach questions about training, food, and habits, and get answers based on your own logged data.
• Progress & wellness tracking — weight, measurements, water, sleep, and recovery check-ins, all in one place.

The Fitness Coach is included with Premium — so it's free to try during your 2-week welcome trial, and stays unlocked while your Premium subscription is active.

SmartGroceryAI runs on scan coins, with a Premium plan on top:

• Free plan — scan coins refill automatically each day. You can earn extra coins by watching a rewarded ad, or buy a one-time refill pack from the Coins page. Every refill pack purchase also includes 2 weeks of Premium as a bonus — and if you already have Premium time left, the two weeks are added on top.
• Premium — a recurring subscription (billed every 33 days through secure Stripe checkout) with unlimited scans, no ads, and the AI Health Reports.
• Android app — in the SmartGroceryAI mobile app on Google Play, coin refills and the Premium subscription are purchased securely through Google Play billing, using the payment method saved to your Google account.
• Coming soon — SmartGroceryAI is coming to the App Store for iPhone and iOS soon.

If a Premium payment doesn't go through, the plan simply pauses — you return to the Free plan until the payment succeeds, and nothing in your lists, saved products, or history is lost. Your data always remains safe.

• Good lighting — scan in bright, even light; store lighting is usually enough.
• Clear barcode — flatten crinkled packaging so the whole barcode is visible.
• Stable camera — hold the phone still for a second and let auto-capture do the work.
• Clean lens — a quick wipe of the camera lens makes a big difference.
• Avoid glare — tilt shiny packaging slightly so light doesn't reflect over the barcode or label.

• Barcode won't scan — check lighting and glare, move the phone a little closer or further, or use the torch button. If the barcode is damaged, use Product Lookup with photos instead.
• Product not found — very new or local products may not be in any database yet. Take photos of the product and label in Product Lookup, or enter it manually — it will be remembered for next time.
• Wrong product shown — adjust the name or price before adding the item; your correction is saved to your own record and used for your future scans.
• Blurry image — hold still, tap to focus, clean the lens, and retake the photo in better light.
• Internet issues — scanning needs a connection to look up products. If a lookup fails, check your signal and try again; your list stays safe either way.

• Camera permission is used only for scanning — the camera is off everywhere else in the app.
• Photos and screenshots you upload are used only to identify the product you asked about.
• Personal images are never used for advertising.
• Your grocery lists, prices, and health profile belong to you — they are your data.
